Building statistical excellence for Africa’s future
Introduction to STATAFRIC
The African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC) is a specialized technical agency of the African Union Commission. Based in Tunis, Tunisia, STATAFRIC was established to coordinate and harmonize statistical activities across the continent and to support evidence-based decision-making in line with Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Core mandates and strategic missions
STATAFRIC plays a central role in the development of statistics in Africa by:
- Coordinating the implementation of the Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa (SHaSA2), ensuring coherence among continental, regional, and national statistical initiatives.
- Leading continental statistical programs, including the development of Pan-African statistical frameworks, guidelines, and tools to ensure comparability and quality of data.
- Strengthening the capacities of National Statistical Systems (NSS) through technical assistance, peer reviews, and targeted support to improve data production, dissemination, and use.
- Facilitating partnerships and resource mobilization to support statistical development and foster innovation in data ecosystems.
Focus on Capacity Development
At the heart of STATAFRIC’s mission is the commitment to build resilient, modern, and effective National Statistical Systems across Africa. Through tailored training, expert missions, and institutional support, STATAFRIC empowers countries to produce high-quality, timely, and policy-relevant statistics. This is essential to drive development planning, monitor progress, and promote accountability at all levels.
